Injection Service

At Marron’s Pharmacy, our pharmacists are trained and experienced vaccinators for the Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccinations but we are also trained and certified to administer intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SC) injections.

It frequently happens that patients are discharged home from hospital are required to administer themselves a daily injection such as a blood thinner. Patients are also required to administer weekly, fortnightly or monthly injections of other medicines. If you have no problem administering this injection yourself, you will not need our help.

Who can we help?

Many people have :

  • A fear of injections.
  • A fear of doing their injection wrong.
  • No appropriate means to safely dispose of the injection (sharps disposal).
  • Poor eyesight.
  • Dexterity problems such as arthritis or ulnar drift.
  • A tremor in their hand, maybe from Parkinson’s, essential tremor or anxiety.

We can assist you if any of the above applies to you. If all you need is someone to watch and help you do it right yourself that is ok also.

Ideally, you should have had your medicine dispensed with us so we know a registered prescriber has prescribed the medicine for you and we have a copy of your prescription on file.

If you are not a patient of Marron’s Pharmacy, you will need a copy of your prescription as well as I.D. so we can verify some things.

Who can we not help?

We can not administer injections to people who have bought stuff on the internet.

We will not administer to children or young adults (under 18).

We will not administer by any other injection route except the IM or SC route.

We will not administer if we are not satisfied your prescriber is genuine and you are to be the recipient of the injection.

Ideally, a registered Irish prescriber wrote your prescription. The only exception is patients getting IVF treatment abroad but in the EU and ideally, you are liaised with an Irish prescriber for follow-up.

Is there anything else I need to know about this service?

You will need to complete a consent/indemnity form.

You should allow 20mins for completion of the service, which includes injection prep time, administration, and good practice observation of the patient post injection.

Ideally, you should book in as the dispensary can be very busy at times if you just walk in.

The cost of this service is €15 for once off injectable medicines dispensed at Marron’s Pharmacy.

Multiple injections or injections dispensed at other pharmacies will incur higher but reasonable costs.

(If your injection was dispensed at another pharmacy, you will need to bring a copy of your prescription so the pharmacist can verify the medicine was prescribed by a registered doctor.)
